Ultra Motion actuators have a long-standing history in critical space missions, including:

Ultra Motion’s suite of servo actuators provides environmentally hardened, reliable, and power-dense actuation options that meet the demands of the defense industry. All of our servo actuators utilize our patented Phase Index absolute position feedback and include built-in brushless DC control electronics. Communication protocols like RS-485 and CAN 2.0B allow for complete control over the actuator while enabling detailed telemetry for health monitoring and preventative maintenance.

Design features include:
- D38999 connectors with custom options including alternative keying arrangements, finishes, and connectors.
- Saltwater resistance for marine and shipboard applications.
- Preloaded actuators for zero backlash, increased stiffness, and maximum control authority.
- Pressure-compensated oil-filled designs for submerged operation to depths exceeding 6000 meters.
- Dual redundant actuators with redundant motors, controllers, and triplicated absolute position feedback when single electrical fault tolerance is required.
Typical defense applications include:
- Vehicle Control: fixed-wing surfaces, swashplate and tail-rotor, fins, subsea rudder/fin, hydrofoils, landing gear, etc.
- Utility Actuation: hatches, pin release, sensor deployment

Great to see our U1 subsea linear actuator being used in North Sea Systems' CableFish. The system provides subsea cable installers with continuous video and mapping of the product as it contacts the seabed. Our actuator enables the survey carriage to be attached and removed from the cable without any manual intervention - thereby improving safety. As the offshore wind industry comes to our shores, we hope to see CableFish in action in the US soon. Contact us for more information on our line of underwater actuators.

Servo Cylinder is used to test future interplaneta

Servo Cylinder is used to test future interplanetary rotorcraft in simulated Titan atmosphere. Seen in the center left of the image, a Servo Cylinder was insulated in order to maintain an acceptable temperature for operation while exposed to the -181 °C temperature. The Servo Cylinder has built-in temperature feedback and a special heating firmware that makes use of non-torque generating phase currents to turn the motor into a heater for extremely cold ambient environment applications. The airborne lunar spectral irradiance mission (Air-LUSI) is a partnership between @nasa and @nist to create SI-traceable measurements of lunar spectral irradiance in an effort to improve the measurements of Earth observing satellites.
An autonomous robotic telescope mount instrument subsystem (ARTEMIS) was created by Dr. S. Andrew Gadsden and his team in the Intelligent Control and Estimation laboratory at the @uofguelph (Ontario, Canada) in order to accurately track the moon during the flight. Two Ultra Motion Servo Cylinders were successfully employed to control the telescope’s elevation and azimuth throughout the flights.
